Alberto Orso suosittelee: Theakston's Old Peculier

En loppuvuoden kiireiden vuoksi ole ehtinyt aikoihin päivitellä täällä blogissani, mutta ryhdytään korjaamaan tilannetta näin loppiaisen kunniaksi.

Näin talvisaikaan on mukavaa silloin tällöin maistella hieman tummia ja tukevia oluita. Eräs ehdottomista suosikeistani on englantilaisen Theakston-panimon legendaarinen vanha kummallinen, Old Peculier.

Old Peculieria saa muuten Englannissa myös hanasta, kuten Lontoossa British Museumin nurkalla sijaitsevassa Museum Tavernissa napattu kuva todistaa.

Iloista alkanutta vuotta ja loppiaista kaikille hyvän ruuan ja juoman ystäville!

Approved by Alberto Orso: Theakston's Old Peculier

Thanks to the extremely hectic pre-Christmas season, I have been miserably neglecting this blog far too long. As a celebration of Epiphany, I will now right this wrong.

These winter times provide an excellent opportunity to taste dark and full-bodied winter beers every now and then. One of my favorite dark ales is Theakston's Old Peculier. As it is being available all year around, it is not a real winter or Christmas ale per se, but I have quite often procured it as a Christmas' treat for myself. Unfortunately, it is not available here in Finland nowadays, so I had to bring the batch for this jule tide from the UK already back in summer!

Old Peculier is available on the tap as well in the UK, as we can see from the picture taken at the Museum Tavern near British Museum in London.

Happy new year for all friends of good food and drink!

Alberto Orso suosittelee: Brouwerij De Prael, Amsterdam

Olemme Olivian kanssa aiemmilla matkoillamme vierailleet mm. Carlsbergin panimolla Kööpenhaminassa ja Guinnessin panimolla Dublinissa, joten kun Olivia huomasi matkaoppaasta, että aivan Amsterdamin keskustassa sijaitseva pienpanimo De Prael järjesti kiertokäyntejä, päätimme oitis ottaa tilaisuudesta vaarin. De Prael löytyikin helposti punaisten lyhtyjen alueen laitamilta osoitteesta Oudezijds Voorburgwal 30.

Panimon tilat levittäytyvät kanavan varressa olevan rakennusvanhuksen kolmeen kerrokseen.

Approved by Alberto Orso: Brouwerij De Prael, Amsterdam

On our holiday trips I have quite often visited famous breweries like Carlsberg in Copenhagen or Guinness in dublin with my wife Olivia. So, when Olivia read from the travel guide that a micro-brewery De Prael in the heart of Amsterdam offers guided tours, we just had to take advantage of the opportunity. We found De Prael easily on the edge of Amsterdam's red light district at Oudezijds Voorburgwal 30.

The brewing house occupies all three floors of an old building standing just on the bank of a canal. The actual brewing takes place on the two upper floors where as the street level is reserved for fermenting and bottling facilities and a small shop. Unfortunately they don't have licence to allow tasting of the beer at the brewery itself but this is easily helped at their own tasting room just around the corner at Warmoestraat 15. The beers of De Prael are also available on off-license bars and pubs around the Netherlands.

The brewery appeared rather cozy and interesting place from outside - it would never occure to me to run a brewery in a multi-storey building on a hectic downtown area - and this first impression was further confirmed while we got inside. It very soon became evident that the staff were very nice folks indeed. When we asked the opportunity to have guided tour, they immediately arranged one just for the two of us!

First we got to see the fermentation tanks and the bottling line. The jovial young fellow who was working with the stickers even presented me with one as a souvenir. From the bottling department we proceeded by climbing to the top floor to learn about the different kind of malts used for De Prael beers. We also heard that they used to have a cat there to keep the malt-loving mice away but then the sanitary inspector ordered it to be removed from the premises. I strongly disagree with such a resolution - every brewery should have the right to have their own cat!

The next stop was the heart of the brewery - the shiny German made mashing vessels. What a glorious sight. And smell, as they had just completed the day's mashing process. As we descended back to the street level, we stopped again by the fermentation tanks as I wanted to be photographed with them.

When we praised the easy-going, laid-back but still enthusiastic attitude of the employees who also seemed to be very proud of the beer they were brewing, our guide told us that there is a very good reason for that: almost all 60 workers have a history of problems with their mental health and working at the brewery is part of their recovering process that helps them to get their lives back on the tracks again and provides the stepping stones for returning to the work as well. We were quite surprised to hear this but nonetheless very happy for these people. Apparently this arrangement work extremely well as I have never seen so committed and happy community in a work place ever before. And it seems to be also economically fruitful as they were building an extension wing to the brewery on their backyard.

Of course I had to also buy a small sample of beers to be taken home. The De Prael beers are rather bitter tasting and many of them are very strong. An interesting catch are the names of the beers - they are all named after famous Dutch levenslied singers. Definitely worth approving - proost!

Alberto Orso suosittelee: Timothy Taylor's Landlord

Timothy Taylor's Landlord on mitä mainion pale ale, jonka voimakas humalointi saa kuonon suorastaan kihelmöimään ensimmäisellä kulauksella.

Parhaimmissa maistamissani steak and ale -piiraissa oluena on käytetty juurikin Landlordia. Tässä esimerkkinä Lontoon Strandilla, melkein British Computing Societyn toimiston naapurissa sijaitsevassa "The Coal Hole" -pubissa nautittu annos:

Ruokajuomana yllä... no arvaatte varmaan.

Cheers!

Lisäys 13.2.2011: Hurraa! Landlordia löytyy nyt pullotavarana myös lähikauppamme hyllystä:

Approved by Alberto Orso: Timothy Taylor's Landlord

If I was asked what is my personal favorite among the British bitters right now, my answer would be most likely Timothty Taylor's Landlord. It is an excellent pale ale with very strong taste of hops - it's actually so hoppy that it's almost itching in your nose on the first sip. Landlord is brewed by Timothy Taylor & Co. in Keighley, West Yorkshire, and is available as cask ale in pubs all around England. According to the brewery's website, there is also a bottled version available as well, but I have only seen it served from the cask.

Landlord is not only an excellent companion for traditional pub food but also a very good choice for cooking. The best steak and ale pies I have had have been made of Landlord, like the one in the picture taken at "The Coal Hole" on Strand, London.

Cheers!

Edit February 13th 2011: Hurrah! The bottled version of Landlord is now also available at our local grocery store.
